Free Store Event

Reduce with Reuse

Recycling is great, but reusing and reducing is better.
Reuse matters because tons of trash (and dollars) can really add up. Each time
you choose used over new, you’re helping to redirect materials from landfills, and
you’re extending the life cycles of natural resources already in circulation.

Freecycling
One person’s trash is another’s treasure. Take part in the Free Store Event this
Friday December 10th 12-4pm in the Fishbowl, sponsored by The Food Justice
Alliance and GW Roots & Shoots.

As you’re thinking of packing up for home, maybe you are studying abroad,
or you just can’t find your textbooks under all the clutter… this is your chance
to purge some of the items you no longer need or want. Bring your gently
used clothing, household items, books or any other odds and ends and give
someone else a change to enjoy them rather than throwing them out. You can
drop off what you don’t want or need and pick up any items that catch your eye!
Everything is FREE!

All leftover items will be donated. Contact foodjusticealliance@gmail.com with
any questions.

Film Screening and Discussion: The Dark Side of Chocolate

Tonight 7pm
1957 E Street (Elliott), Room 113

This short documentary (40 min) takes a critical look at the global supply chain that feeds into the world's largest confectionery brands. We will use this film to jumpstart a discussion about consumer responsibility on GW's campus.

Thanks to the consortium of clubs sponsoring this campaign, Fair Trade certified chocolate will be available in the Marvin Center beginning this week. Should we stop there, or push for additional Fair Trade and Sustainably Farmed products at the University? Help us decide at 7:00 pm on Thursday.

Leading figures from the Fair Trade and Labor Solidarity movements will attend this event to field questions from the audience.

Two-Day Healthy Food Workshop Saturday & Sunday

This is a great looking workshop that is being offered in DC this weekend. Melissa and I had the pleasure of meeting Julia and Andrew, the leaders, at the FRESH event last night and they said they would be happy to give anyone from FJA a reduced student discount of $50 to attend the event. Consider going, it looks awesome.

The Deepening Roots (www.deepeningroots.org) weekend workshop is a dynamic, hands-on educational program in which we discuss and put into practice five elements we believe are key to sustainable development: meditation, health, agriculture, empowerment and community. People of all backgrounds and experience levels have enjoyed this workshop, and walked away with enthusiasm, new knowledge and the tools to apply it. Our overall goal is to inspire, get people thinking about food and community from a fresh perspective, and provide some basic practical knowledge to implement the elements in their own lives.
